The week in celebrity ensembles, with Kerry Washington and more

Our weekly look at the stunningly beautiful and beautifully ugly celebrity ensembles that set the group chat alight.

Best bow

I absolutely detest the occasion of this dress, the ultimate privileged nepo baby (or as my favourite podcast called her this week “that massive bitch Miss Apple Martin”) at a Parisian debutante ball where guests are selected, according to the Daily Mail, “based on their appearance, intelligence and family connections”. This is the vibe shift Zoe always talks about in full effect.

Yes, I am dying a little bit (a lot) inside by including a 20-year-old wearing custom Valentino to her entry into society, or whatever the heck a debutante ball represents, but a great dress is a great dress, especially one with a great bow. This is also the first look I’ve seen by new(ish) Valentino designer Alessandro Michele that doesn’t look like his designs for Gucci under a different swing tag. The blue is rather unexpected and really great, especially against the black detail. If this was anyone else of talent/fame/profile, I would’ve included it in a heartbeat so please don’t judge me, I’ve already had stern words with myself. – Rebecca Wadey

Best pink and sparkly

My Spotify Wrapped this year confirmed that I am basic (top artists: Kacey, Charli, Chappell, Sabrina, Beyoncé), but I’m at peace with that. This dazzling gown on Kerry Washington appeals to that not-so-inner basic: pink, sparkly, vintage-inspired, gorgeous. But it’s by Prada, so it’s chic. Kerry often wears Prada, and I love how she brings cool and strength to the brand’s sometimes blatant whimsy – exactly what she’s doing here with this ensemble. I also really love the full, curly, slightly triangular bob. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

Best controlled chaos

There’s nothing I love more than a clash of colour, texture and print. Of course, under a lay person (like, cough, me) this approach can veer slightly into derelict chic meets non-coastal grandmother, but when executed by a master in the craft it is sheer perfection (please excuse the pun in this case). Saint Laurent designer Anthony Vaccarello is undoubtedly a master of his craft, but in my mind, at least, is better known for the sheer, short, black dresses favoured by Zoë Kravitz and other ambassadors. This gorgeous thing on Emma Corrin is completely unexpected and totally brilliant. Emma and their stylist Harry Lambert have an incredible, non-serious yet extremely intelligent approach to fashion that always resonates with me. Pus, as someone with no nipples (normalise people who have had mastectomies lol) I always love them proudly flaunted. – Rebecca Wadey

Best collar

Yet another fab ensemble from Elle Fanning for her A Complete Unknown press tour: this pale blue skirt suit by Patou, an underappreciated French brand that does ‘intelligent whimsy’ so well. I’m featuring the cropped photo here because the star of the look is the  vintage-style oversized double collar, and her really good hair. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

Best LBD

Sometimes a dress is so cute, it doesn’t need much styling at all – like this Nina Ricci LBD on Monica Barbaro, also on the press tour for the film A Complete Unknown (she plays Joan Baez). I obviously love the subtle bow at the chest, but also how stylist Jeanann Williams paired the very little dress with sheer stockings, pointed pumps and a simple Bvlgari bracelet. – ZWA
