The week in celebrity outfits, with Lorde, Rihanna and Ilona Maher

Our weekly look at the stunningly beautiful and beautifully ugly celebrity ensembles that set the group chat alight.

Best hair

People say we’re alike, they say we’ve got the same hair”. And by people I mean me. I have a mass of thick curly hair, the same as Royals and Melodrama era Lorde (but not Solar Power era Lorde). So I was gagged by this super-cute double (quadruple?) plait look she wore to Charli xcx’s birthday party in LA. I will definitely be attempting this at home and will not look at all like a middle-aged woman attempting brat.

Lorde and Charli do share a hairdresser: Zoe’s former hairdresser Matt Benns, so I wonder if he was involved in this masterpiece. The makeup is by Lorde’s regular makeup artist and our friend Amber D, and the outfit by Kiwi brand Paris Georgia (designer Paris Mitchell-Temple styled Ella for an Ensemble shoot last year). Anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with a flat shoe and fancy sock too, so at this point we are practically twins - Rebecca Wadey

We photographed and interviewed US rugby player, Olympian and TikTok star Ilona Maher way back in 2022, and it’s been a delight to see her star shine even brighter following her success at the Paris Olympics (she even reshared a photo from our shoot to her 3.3m followers). Her social content from Paris has been typically playful with lots of inside access, well-applied lipstick and smart perspectives (her tagline is ‘beast, beauty, brains’). Typically, and annoyingly, she’s also had to deal with some trolling and loser comments about her appearance and body. But this sleek blue gown, worn while “looking for love at the Louvre”, shows it off unapologetically and confidently – the embodiment of what she stands for. “Dear girl with the big shoulders, You are not undesirable. You are not built like a linebacker. You are not manly. You are not unattractive. You are beautiful. You are imposing. You are powerful. You are magnificent. Put your shoulders back, wear your head high, and walk into any room like you own the place.” – Zoe Walker Ahwa

Best animal print

I adore animal print. Leopard, tiger, cheetah, zebra - you name it, I am here for it. Our beloved Riri is channelling it all in this incredible shoot for Perfect magazine, styled by editor-in-chief Katie Grand. Photographer Carlijn Jacobs gushed “Rihanna is up for anything… I asked her to eat pasta with a fork but she went and put the pasta in her mouth with her hands in leather gloves”.

Those photos are also incredible but I literally gasped at the shots of a blonde, bedazzled Riri, posing in a clash of print (she took care to point out that all tigers and furs used in the shoot were faux). It’s giving Brigitte Bardot meets Bet Lynch, and it perfectly highlights the playfulness yet full commitment of Rihanna that pushes her into these exceptional high fashion environments just days after nailing street style. - RW

Cate Blanchett has had a really good week of outfits, on the promo trail for her film Borderlands, including a 70s denim-look blue velvet suit by Brandon Maxwell for an appearance on morning TV and a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier jacket from the 90s. But this look is hands down the best: a top, made from 102 vintage spoons sourced, according to her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, in the Swedish countryside. It’s by a brand called Hoda Kova, which focuses on “converted goods” – a fancy way of saying upcycling. I do think Cate is genuine in her embrace of sustainability through her fashion, having regularly chosen vintage, pieces made with reclaimed or repurposed fabrics and ‘reworn’ looks on the red carpet – and she looks like she’s having real fun while doing it. – ZWA

Best bow

Another week, another bow. Melissa Jefferson may not have won the gold medal in the women’s 100m sprint but the bronze medallist won the style stakes with the bow she wore to compete in. Honestly, all the track girlies won my heart during the competition, including our fave Zoe Hobbs - they clearly have so much fun with their hair, makeup, nails; there’s such a playfulness to their peacocking I adore and yet they are so confident and focused.

Watching them line up before a race is something I could observe for hours. I also appreciated the winged eyeliner and incredible nails of silver medallist Sha’Carri Richardson, but we all know I can’t go past a bow. The Ensemble x Caitlin Snell purple bow would’ve looked incredible against the chic lilac Parisian track (it symbolises the country’s lavender fields), just saying. – RW

Sorry to Paris, but Nicole Richie was always the real star of The Simple Life. The pair have reunited to film a new season of the show (yay!), with a sneak peek this week at what they’ll be doing with some photos at a Sonic drive-thru. The best part is, of course, Nicole pulling on the hot dog mascot uniform over her Saint Laurent mini dress and with sharp pointy pumps – proving that her silly sense of humour (and style) is still top tier. – ZWA
