These pre-social media Met Gala looks are iconic

As we wait with baited breath to see the ensembles at this year’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ themed Met Gala, we’re revisiting some of our favourite looks of the past, from the Disco Era to Y2K.

These were simpler times, with no social media, fewer stylists and photographers (and probably more raucous A-list behaviour... ). Since 1948, the stars have brought glamour to the infamous steps of New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. But these vintage looks are a far cry from the fashion spectacles we see on red carpets today.

Back then, it was normal for guests to style themselves for fashion’s biggest night. Dressing to the theme meant you could still move freely without a team of assistants. For decades The Met was essentially a black tie event with a touch more drama, then with the turn of Y2K we saw a lot more casual dressing - and body glitter.

From Cher’s glitzy Tom Mackie gowns to 3LW’s matching neon yellow outfits, these Met Gala throwbacks will forever be iconic.
