“Why does Liam Gallagher wear a parka… Because it makes me look cool.”
Oasis is reuniting, after 15 years. The Gallagher brothers have (apparently) put aside their differences and will play shows next year, to the squeals of Britpop and parka fans everywhere.
The band is known for its style, but it’s Liam (sorry Noel) who has truly solidified himself as a style icon with his bucket hats, swagger and collection of parka jackets worn zipped and buttoned up to the top – a look he’s committed to since 1995.
Today, he has particularly bougie taste in parks, wearing versions from designer brands including Burberry, Isabel Marant, Tommy Hilfiger and JW Anderson. He also favours functional sportswear labels like Barbour, Stone Island, Mackintosh, Canada Goose and Stone Island; for the band’s reunion announcement promo shot, he’s wearing a C.P. Company ‘Pium’ hooded jacket.
Liam is right: parkas do make you look cool. They have waves of popularity but are a fashion classic; one of those items that you probably already have in your wardrobe and which designers regularly offer, season after season.
Here in New Zealand there are several options from local brands, from Harris Tapper’s elegant lightweight nylon style to Rebe’s shower-proof jacket with detachable hood. We know that some of the options below are not technically parkas, but are anoraks, rain jackets or trenches that can be worn done up to the very top to capture the Liam Gallagher spirit (bonus points for a bucket hat too). Vintage is always a good option, as are legit practical jackets from an army surplus store.
The key, as always when it comes to personal style and anything to do with the Gallagher brothers, is the attitude you wear it with.
To quote Liam again: “Are you hot in that parka? Yeah I am hot in it, shit hot.”
