The week in celebrity ensembles, with Keke Palmer, Alexa Chung and more

Our weekly look at the stunningly beautiful and beautifully ugly celebrity ensembles that set the group chat alight.

Best denim

People sleep on Keke Palmer, a hilarious walking meme machine with massively underrated style. Keke and her stylist Zoe Costello have been killing it on the press tour for her just released memoir, Master of Me (that I can’t wait to read), with lots of bold tailoring and vintage looks – but this vintage 1986 denim skirt suit by Alaïa is my favourite, with its perfect styling from head-to-toe. Also, a round of applause for the volume of this hair. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

Best power suit

It’s always a great time when Jodie Turner Smith is on the promotional trail, so I’m excited to see her talk about her new show The Agency - even if I’m less excited to watch what sounds like a standard British spy thriller. As a former model, she has an advantage over many, but it’s obvious she truly loves wearing clothes and has a deep appreciation for fashion, and the craft her longtime stylists Wayman and Micah bring to it. The Grace Jones references in this Balmain suit and its eighties inspo are obvious, but together, designer Olivier Rousteing, Jodie and her stylists have made something completely fresh and new. It’s hard to see in stills, but the detailing through the back is exquisite and utterly impeccable. I’m eagerly awaiting the rest of her press tour. – Rebecca Wadey

Best kilt

I love tartan. I love kilts. And for a while now I’ve loved Le Kilt – a Scottish brand by Samantha McCoach, who was recruited to collaborate on kilts with Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior’s latest Cruise show. Alexa Chung obviously looks great in one of the head to toe runway looks, with her booted, thigh high-socked leg peeking out of the Le Kilt collab, because she’d look great in a dress made from toilet paper. But still, this photo makes me want every single item she's wearing. And while I definitely can't afford new Dior, I feel like I could maybe get a close enough approximation from an op shop. And one day when I’m rich (ha ha I work in journalism) I will buy myself a Le Kilt kilt. – Georgie Wright

My first thought on seeing this Alexander McQueen look on queen Tracee Ellis Ross was, ‘hot’, followed by ‘that looks so comfy’ – two seemingly contrasting ideas that somehow work. It helps that Tracee is one of Hollywood’s most effortlessly stylish women who can carry off pretty much anything: even acidic yellow (or lime?) cable knits. Also love the addition of the vintage Louis Vuitton Stephen Sprouse bag. – ZWA

Best Man Repeller Suit*

(*So named for the reference to Leandra Medine Cohen’s original blog, embracing a fashion aesthetic that men traditionally wouldn’t covet women in, rather than the failed and problematic business that it went on to become). I’m obsessed with this Bottega Veneta suit on Elle Fanning, in particular for the jarring contrast between it and the more traditionally pretty outfit I chose as my favourite celebrity look just last week. It’s insouciant, effortless and chic as anything. Also, as perfectly crafted by her stylist Samantha McMillen and hair stylist Jenda, it also contains the most perfect ponytail and hair accessory I’ve seen since we launched our Ensemble hair bows. - RW

Best flamingo

We’re not being hyperbolic when we say that these are the looks that set the group chat alight. Zoe sent through this look with “obsessed”, but unfortunately she’d already penned her celeb looks for the week. Likewise with Rebecca, who responded, “I SAW THAT THE MINUTE I FINISHED MINE AND THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING.” So the honour has befallen me to write about actor and comedian Cole Escola (deep breath) climbing a giant flamingo in Louboutin heels and head to toe Christopher John Rogers at the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. And that sentence kind of says it all doesn’t it? There’s polka dots on the suit, pearls on the flamingo,  fabulousness on a float. We don’t celebrate thanksgiving in New Zealand but this did make us happy. – GW

Best local representation

Okay so this is 8 days ago making it slightly out of contention, but I desperately wanted to shout out this incredible Rory William Docherty dress on 3 Body Problem Star Jess Hong at the NZ TV Awards last Friday. It looked breathtaking to the point I grabbed her arm and hissed ‘where is your dress from?’ in a way that in hindsight may have been unhinged (soz Jess). And when she presented on stage later in the evening it literally danced with her in a display of staggering beauty. Close runner-up was the always iconic Roxie Mohebbi in Paris Georgia and a keffiyeh. - RW
