The week in celebrity ensembles, with Reneé Rapp and more

Our weekly look at the stunningly beautiful and beautifully ugly celebrity ensembles that set the group chat alight.

Everything about the styling of this look on Sarah Paulson is divine, from the bob to the pumps, earrings to the clutch. But what I really love is how the almost severe minimalism of the dress, with its square neckline that sits chicly at the clavicle, is contrasted with the frivolous sequined ribbons at the shoulder. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

I gasped when I saw this look on New Zealand makeup artist (and friend of Ensemble) Amber D’s Insta. Shrinking was one of my favourite shows of 2023 and stars Jessica Williams and Lukita Maxwell are always on my fashion radar. But this look worn by Lukita at the season two premiere is gag-worthy. The makeup (by Amber) is breathtaking and incredible, those brows and eyes! And the dress by Connor McKnight manages to be at once both referential to the nineties, while being modern and non-nostalgic. Connor McKnight is a 2024 CFDA Vogue fashion fund finalist and an emerging designer of the year nominee. I’ll be keeping an eye on him come May 2025 to see if he’s dressing anyone for the Met Gala; his work is a good fit for the theme of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. - Rebecca Wadey

Best tartan

For the second week running, the esteemed Best Tartan award is being bequeathed to a worthy recipient. Last week Paloma Elsesser scored the coveted prize. This week, Riley Keough in The Row takes it out. I like that the shirt is so oversized you can’t see her hands, and that it’s paired with an equally baggy pant. Yet the styling (pointed heels, little bag, nice sunglasses) makes it more elegant and relaxed (albeit while taking photos that look like a staged paparazzi shoot), less going for a hike with Tom Phillips and co in Marokopa. - Georgie Wright

Best at the polo

Polo fashion is a genre that I find hard/near impossible to get excited by, unless it’s Chloë Sevigny’s scalloped short-suit and straw boater from 2009. But this Antonio Marras dress on Suki Waterhouse at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in LA, caught my eye: love the combination of structure (pockets!) and volume (sleeves!), and the idea of a darker floral. Great inspiration for the Urban Polo, if you’re attending… – ZWA

Best casual chic

I have been living for Zoe Saldana’s style as she hits the press circuit for Emilia Perez (co-star Selena Gomez has also had some standouts). Honestly, every outfit is a winner, but if I was forced to choose a favourite it would be this, from The Row. It features a clash of textures and fabrics that from anyone else might be discombobulating (striped cotton shirt, cashmere sweater, satin skirt with scalloped lace trim…) but under the guidance of stylist Petra Flannery, is utter perfection. - RW

Best long skirt

Photo / AP Images

I had a realisation this week that I don’t really wear skirts. Not exactly newsworthy, I know, but there’s nothing like starting work at an office after a long stint working from home to make you think about your (lack of) wardrobe. Getting dressed!  Every day! In something that isn’t sweatpants and a nice top! All that to say: I am trying to branch out. And this look from Reneé Rapp at the Time100 Gala, following the aforementioned tartan number from Paloma Elsesser, is good inspiration to branch out into long skirts. Especially since she’s walking the casual/dressy line so well with the jacket/long skirt situation. When you’re so used to pants, it can feel kind of daunting to free the leg. Can feel a bit like you’re getting ready for a school ball, or church. So a big round of applause to Reneé for proving that you can wear long skirts and look cool and comfortable, and also for being one of the top 100 influential people in the world I guess? But mainly the skirt thing. - GW
