The week in celebrity outfits, with Lady Gaga, Aubrey Plaza and Sabrina Carpenter

Our weekly look at the stunningly beautiful and beautifully ugly celebrity ensembles that set the group chat alight.

It’s so Julia to take this relatively perfunctory Gap shirt dress most people would likely flick past on a rack, and elevate it to a Zac Posen art piece. I forget that former Project Runway judge Zac Posen shuttered his own brand and is now the creative director at Gap until a reminder like this pops up. Julia makes everything she wears into her own personal catwalk and I love that about her. Obviously the styling with the scarf, hat, gloves and bag is something not all of us can pull off, but the dress itself? The collar of the dress and the ruching of the buttons are pretty special. Not since Sharon Stone wore a white Gap shirt to the Oscars back in 1998 has a Gap white shirt been so appealing – Rebecca Wadey

My eye instantly went to Gaga's baby blue nails (then the cigarette, if I'm honest), which remind me of my Baby Spice days and made me want to head to the mall to get my nails painted the same retro shade. They were painted by celebrity nail artist Yoko Sakakura; I'll be looking out for the exact brand and colour...

Gaga's new song, with Bruno Mars, hadn't been released at the time of writing, but their groovy matching ensembles had me in a right tizz; the PERFECT shades of blue and red, and vintage silhouettes that I live for. She was styled by celebrity stylists Chloe & Chenelle Delgadillo which is interesting if you're a Gaga fan and fashion nerd: she's recently been working again with her Haus of Gaga collaborator Nicola Formichetti, but has also been playing around with others (her Dior look for the Olympics ceremony was styled by Sandra Amador). What does that all mean? I dunno, but I can't wait for LG7. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

This pretty black lace look worn by musician Laufey is by Chanel, a brand that’s had such a bad track record of celebrity dressing in recent years that it sparked the hilarious Chanel Flops Instagram. In June, creative director Virginie Viard left the brand, so maybe there is hope for the future? This outfit was styled by one of my favourite stylists Leith Clark – founder of Lula magazine, and one of my idols from my blogger days. Her styling is whimsy personified and she has a real eye for talent, having worked with Kirsten Dunst, Rosamund Pike, Daisy Ridley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Lucy Boynton. Laufey, with her coquette on steroids style, is a perfect addition to that list. – ZWA

When I first scrolled this pic of Aubrey Plaza in ‘vintage’ (it’s from 2020) Rodarte without my glasses on I assumed it was Jenna Ortega doing Beetlejuice promo. But nope, it’s my beloved Aubrey Plaza doing promo for an upcoming Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, released around Halloween.

I loved this sexy gothic dress when I first saw it in 2020 and I love it even more now. I have a long held obsession with Rodarte, the indie brand founded and run by two sisters out of LA. I can’t fathom how hard it is to have an independent luxury brand up against the behemoths of the world (Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Louis Vuitton and the raft of others owned by multinationals worth billions, with marketing budgets to match). Yet somehow they manage to leverage their talent and likeability (they are clearly incredibly well-connected) to not only dress some of the coolest women in the world, but also have them appear in their campaigns. And speaking of Beetlejuice, it’s just been announced the brand is doing a collab with the film. - RW

I’ve not yet been won over by the Sabrina Carpenter marketing campaign, but her recent duet of These Boots Are Made for Walkin' with Kacey Musgraves won me over. And Please, Please, Please is a good song! I think she’s really nailed her naughty pin-up girl aesthetic in a way that feels modern and fun rather than pervy – her stylist is Jared Ellner, who also works with Emma Chamberlain, Ilana Glazer and Rachel Sennott. That’s a stacked cool girl line up. This isn’t the best Miu Miu look I’ve ever seen but I do love when the brand does full-on girly glamour embellishment like this – and Sabrina is a perfect Miu Miu girl. – ZWA

What does one wear for one of their first press appearances as Snow White? A full-skirted silk princess dress, in shade of brown and embellished with sequins and crystal flowers, and a grosgrain hair ribbon of course. I love this look on Rachel Zegler for a Disney event where she introduced the new trailer for the live action adaptation of the classic fairytale – it’s by designer Julie de Libran, who previously worked at Sonia Rykiel and alongside Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton and launched her “responsible couture” line in 2019. The full look of it in motion shows off the full effect of the tulle skirt and sparkles. Adorable! – ZWA
