Abigail Dell’Avo is one of the organisers for Migrant Zine Collective, an enthusiastic Green Party volunteer and a self-confessed “Chlöe Swarbrick stan”. Passionate about people, plants and the planet, she’s currently studying a Master of Urban Planning and Urban Design, with her research focusing on how we can decolonise ourselves and the built environment.
Tāmaki Makaurau-based, she’s lived between Dominion and Sandringham Rds “in our (moderately mouldy) flat for the past two years”; a neighbourhood she values for its culture. “You’ve got Sandringham on one side and Balmoral on the other, it’s a melting pot of cultures and this is reflected in all the incredible food!
Favourite place for a drink?
I’m a sucker for an Aperol Spritz - Candela does a great one! Otherwise, a classic G&T with a side of tater tots at Verona never fails me.
Where do you get your morning coffee - and what’s your coffee order?
Oat flat white and a cinnamon scroll from Bestie! The window seat overlooking Myers Park is one of the best seats in all of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Favourite restaurant to visit with friends?
Aside from visiting Little Turkish Cafe at 3am after a good boogie, I would have to say Mezze Bar comes a close second. I’m a sucker for warm lighting, plants and that hummus...
Best ‘cheap eat’?
Can’t go wrong with a good ol’ New Flavour B.Y.O! Otherwise, Xian Noodle Bar’s hand-pulled noodles are what dreams are made of.
Favourite place for date night?
Satya Chai Lounge. While the dates have been hit or miss (lol), the food has always been top tier.
The vege manchurian is one of my favourite meals ever, smothered in garlic, onion and chilli. It’s maybe not the best date food if you’re trying to have a smooch later, but it is what it is.
Your regular supermarket?
For fresh fruit and vege, the Wesley Markets are for sure a go-to! Unfortunately, they aren’t open in Level 3, so I’ve been heading to Fresho on Dom Road to get my cheap fruit and vege, as well as my $2 samosa fix.
Favourite gallery or museum?
ArtSpace Aotearoa on Karangahape Rd or Studio One Toi Tū just around the corner.
Where do you go for a workout?
Mount Eden or Big King, there’s always cute doggos (and owners) around!
