Ensemble is thrilled to be presenting preview screenings of Joy Ride in Auckland and Wellington on Tuesday July 4, 6.30pm at Event Cinemas Newmarket and Penthouse Cinema.
We have 20 double passes to give away to each screening. Enter here:
There are a bunch of reasons you should see this film. Originally titled the Joy Fuck Club and directed by Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim, every member of the all Asian American core cast is one to watch.
Like Ashley Park, the true fashion girlie from Emily in Paris.
Stephanie Hsu, winner of Best Breakthrough Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards last year for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Sabrina Wu, a standup comedian with the most incredible deadpan delivery; it’s fitting they play a character called Deadeye.
Comedian Sherry Cola, whose character Lolo is described as a “sex positive artiste and fiercely loyal friend.”
Unlike its near namesake The Joy Luck Club, Joy Ride isn’t a sweeping multigenerational drama that broke cinematic ground. It does, however, follow in the hallowed footsteps of female-focused comedies like Bridesmaids, Girls Trip and other ‘gross out’ comedies that are rarely told from a woman's perspective - and even less likely to be told through the voices of Asian women.
As we stare down the barrel of a cold, wet winter after a cold, wet summer, Joy Ride is the silly tummy-cackling good time we deserve.
Joy Ride will be in cinemas around Aotearoa from July 6.
