Helen is an Auckland-based writer, zine-maker, part time illustrator. She founded the Migrant Zine Collective in 2017, where migrants of colour celebrate and share what it means to be a person of colour living in Aotearoa today. She is completing her Masters in Communication Studies, (see Asian Feminist Project Aotearoa via her Instagram @chinesegoth) specialising in digital media grounded in activism and storytelling.
Through her work, Helen aims to amplify the experiences of migrants of colour, centring their voices and addressing issues such as feminism and identity. Independent expression has empowered her to use digital design to facilitate these conversations in an accessible, creative way.

Aesop Marrakech Intense eau de toilette, $115
I've been using this fragrance for a while, but I love all the fragrances at Aesop. This one lasts through the day and leaves a warm, spicy scent.
Dr Martens 1461 Quad platform, $329
These have been my go-to shoes for the past two years, including a few trips overseas and the everyday walk up to campus. I love how durable Docs are and that they literally match any outfit.
All About Love by bell hooks, $30
I finished this during lockdown and would definitely recommend to everyone! It really helped me rethink and navigate aspects of my interpersonal relationships, and rethink the cultural understandings I had of love.
Gorman quilted tote bag, $45 (on sale)
I've always loved all the colourful patterns at Gorman, especially their summer dresses. I have one of their tote bags which goes really well with the muted colours I wear everyday.
Kinto coffee mug, $27
I'm probably guilty of having an extensive mug collection, but I recently bought this cute mug at Ark Coffee, one of my favourite cafes on Auckland’s North Shore. I've been enjoying all my teas and warm drinks in here while recently recovering from a cold.
CorsX Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream, $30
Repping K-beauty products because they don't get enough attention! The cold weather has been really harsh on my skin and this cream has been a great day and night to keep my skin hydrated.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong, $34
I recently started this book by Vietnamese American writer Ocean Vuong and I've been reading a few pages every night before bed. It's really well-written and dives into the complex experiences of migration, intergenerational and collective trauma.
Muji notebook
I always keep a notebook in my backpack for planning and illustrations. I've loved Muji since I was a kid and I can't believe they still don't have it here in New Zealand!
Uniqlo x Hana Tajima pants
I have two pairs of these pants. I love the silhouette and how it fits perfectly with my winter coats. I usually go for clothes that are tailored for a looser fit because much of my work involves moving around, interacting with people and creating.
