Cool photos from a cool festival

Remember personal style? Like real, genuine, individual personal style that’s developed through taste and experimentation? Lately we’ve wondered if Instagram had well and truly ruined the concept, with its endless influencer photo shoots, PR product placements and algorithm-friendly minimal aesthetics. Admittedly it's not a new concern: remember the peacocking of street style, in the 'before times' when fashion weeks and crowds were still a thing?

It’s all strangely had us hankering for the old-school party photos of the mid-noughties: candid, unposed, slightly messy. Sure there were posers (there were definitely posers), but in hindsight it felt like people were expressing themselves through clothes and style, rather than fashion or borrowed samples. Fortunately, we’re seeing that spirit of fun and self-expression once more at various club nights and festivals - gatherings that we’re lucky enough to be able to attend freely here in Aotearoa.

Earlier this month photographer Olivia Renouf went along to one such festival with its own unique vibe - Nest Fest at Black Barn Vineyard in the sunny Hawke’s Bay, featuring artists like Silicon, MELODOWNZ, King Sweeties, Mermaidens and more. She took along her (film) camera to document the personal style of some of the attendees - keep scrolling for more fun looks.
