I bought some a while ago and then they gave me some! I adore its scrunchy look and it’s much softer than I imagined. It feels gorgeous to sleep in, somehow way more snuggly than cotton. And who wants a white bed sheet? Especially if you’re a coffee-in-bed drinker with a dog like me.
A Glasgow company. They were commissioned to design Tommy Shelby’s specs for the last season of Peaky Blinders. I have 2 pairs of sunnies and some specs. Reasonably priced, unique, styley and a bit of fun in there. My new fave.
Smith and Western ‘Lantern’ top
A Queenstown company. Francesca King started this company oooh…15-20 years ago maybe. Her fabrics are so beautiful and her ‘Lantern’ tops are the perfect go anywhere, do anything top. I have six of them. Jeans and a ‘Lantern' top are my uniform really. Anything from chucking over togs on the beach, running around being a Mum all day, going out at night…depending on the fabric, they are a multi-purpose style. And they always look amazing. I bought three for my sisters’ at Xmas.
I’m not an online shopper and buy NZ Made mostly…except for two weaknesses. Chinti and Parker work with sustainable, cruelty free cashmere and they reuse their yarns. Their jumpers are unlike any others. Stunning, life-long pieces. I have a cobalt blue jumper with the Pisces constellation (they did a whole astrology series) which will be a life favourite; I’ll probably be buried in it (in 50 years!). They are fiendishly expensive…FIENDISH. But I stalk them online and when they have their 80 percent off sale, I strike once and I strike hard.
My second weakness. ON is a Swedish sports brand, and their Cloud trainer is the most comfortable I’ve ever worn. I’m not a sports person, but I walk a lot. A LOT. I swear you could sleep in these and forget you were wearing them. Plus the colours are delicious.
I own three. JH makes her clothes in New Zealand. I always look at the “made in” label and sadly, some NZ designers still manufacture their clothing off shore, so I don't buy them. But the JH jumpsuits are so great. Again, all purpose. The fabrics mean you can be super posh in some f**k off heels or wear them with sneakers. Big, big fan.
Cruelty free beauty
There’s no excuse not to buy cruelty free cosmetics now - there are budget and luxury brands. Urban Decay is great. I use their products a lot cos they are not expensy and are really great. Westman Atelier is my new favourite foundation. I find as I get older, it’s the base which is the thing - not to heavy, not too light, not greasy but not dry (I don't like powder). WA foundation sticks are the bomb; they remind me of the old Shiseido beauty cake from a million years ago.
Lastly, a shout out to my mates who run Search and Destroy on Auckland’s Ponsonby Road. They sell pre-loved clothing, homeware, ceramics, records, jeans and there’s a cafe, turntable and bar indoors. Plus they are doggie friendly. Best thing to hit P Road since forever. Thanks to them, my boys only will buy secondhand. Hallelujah!
