In the age of ChatGPT and radical digitisation, it’s no surprise that home appliances, particularly refrigerators, are getting the technological shove into the next generation. And honestly, we’re not mad about it. Otherwise we’d never have known that a fridge could rattle our senses and tech cravings so intensely.
We’re not self-proclaimed fridge wizards, having always considered them a practical purchase. As long as they keep wine cold, ice frozen, and don’t leak, they’ll suffice. But as our phone updates, unlocking more world-altering features to make life easier, why shouldn’t our fridge update too? LG Electronic has been asking this question since 1958.
Last month, the South Korean electronics company celebrated the launch of its latest boundary pushing appliance, the LG InstaView fridge with MoodUP® LED colour panels. Ensemble was invited to its immersive activation at Vivid Sydney 2023, an annual 23-day celebration of innovation and light in Sydney, Australia — a perfect platform for LG to bring the party. Much like the installations lighting up Sydney harbour, LG’s new fridge is hypnotic, to say the least. Not only are there many new features that you can control from your phone (via the LG ThinQ® app1), but this fridge can light up with colours that reflect your mood.
The world first caught wind of the LG InstaView fridges with MoodUP® tech masterpiece last year in Berlin when the demo was unveiled at the IFA 2022 and online chatter has run rampant ever since. Since then, LG has played it coy, with release dates and exact model specifics being speculative. It’s only now that they’ve confirmed the new fridge with MoodUP® feature will be available for New Zealand customers from July.
Cut to last month, and we were able to see MoodUP® in the flesh, trying out its features first-hand from inside LG’s installation at Vivid Sydney 2023. The model is a configuration of LG French door fridges built with customisable LED colour panels (seriously customisable - there are up to 170,000 colour combinations to choose from). One of the doors features the innovative InstaView® allowing you to see inside with two quick knocks without opening the door, preventing cold air from escaping and keeping food fresher for longer.
More of MoodUP®’s technological innovations include motion detection to help guide you on your late-night chocolate excursion by illuminating the panels when movement is detected, as well as built-in speakers allowing you to stream music from your compatible mobile device via Bluetooth connection2. Apparently, jazz is the genre that incites the smoothest dancing of colours.
The MoodUP® can also greet you with a welcome light and flashes in a chosen colour if you’ve accidentally left the fridge door open. It’s an intelligent technology, caring for the household as the LG ThinQ® app can notify you when a fridge door has been left open.
It’s funny how, traditionally, household appliances are kept out of sight, out of mind. LG’s MoodUP® fridge will land on the higher end of the price scale but it’s nothing short of art. Art that makes life easier and is an investment in your future. The new fridge also features LG’s innovative features such as the Surround Cooling™ which allows cold air to surrounds the food from both the front and back for effective cooling - quickly reducing the temperature of those items stored at the front of the fridge, and helping keep food fresher for longer.
Rethinking product standards and uniqueness does not stop there for LG. Along with its MoodUP® Fridge, LG also showcased its latest WashTower™ All-In-One Stacked Washer Dryer in Forest Green and Beige that can turn any laundry space aesthetically stylish. It features the AIDD® technology3 that has the ability to weigh the load and assess fabric softness to automatically select the optimal wash motions for thorough cleaning and clothing care, and a heat pump dryer that dries your clothes on low heat, helping to prevent clothing shrinkages. The brand also showcased its latest multi-purpose LG CordZero® Auto Emptying Handstick + Power Mop Vac that self-empties and features a floor mop. Much like the MoodUP® fridge, it can be connected to the ThinQ® app that can remind you when you last vacuumed. A lifesaver for the forgetful!
LG is revolutionising the appliance game, and it’s a joy to be along for the ride with them. Miles Davis blaring from the fridge and all.
